A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR
Willie Russel’s Shirley Valentine requires no introduction to audiences. The play was written in the 1980s and
became an overnight sensation, was turned into a highly successful Hollywood movie and has been translated
into several languages.
With her knowledge of the human condition and her unique world view, Shirley expresses many truths about
women, education, travelling, child-raising and the joys of Greek white wine.
Although Russell’s original play is 25 years old, the story of one woman’s journey to self-discovery has the same
impact on today’s audiences as it did on its first audiences.
