WORLD PREMIERE
VR Theatrical partners with AM Productions and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to bring to life this brand new South African musical to the stage.
Star+Crossed is an exploration of how we use stories and fantasies to transmute a dark barren world into something more meaningful, mythic, and beautiful. This two-hander musical is currently in development.
The character of Bess is loosely inspired by the persona of Elizabeth Klarer who became a minor celebrity in 1950s South Africa because of her alleged relationship with an Alien from another planet, but is also about two unlikely people finding each other in extraordinary circumstances. It is about the forging of a lasting, deep, and profound connection with another human being – a connection that truly transcends time and space. It is about the coming together of two souls.
As a sub-plot, Star-crossed deals with South Africa’s transformation as a country from a place of darkness to a place of light and hope.
The musical spans almost nine decades, from 1910, with the formation of the Union of South Africa, until 1994, when Nelson Mandela is inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratically elected president. The story is about the ideals of two unlikely people (a white woman and a black man) who
find a deep fondness for each other over a long period during South Africa’s troubled past.
The development of the production is dependent on funding from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
